NewsHopper is a Macintosh Usenet newsreader. NewsHopper requires that MacTCP is installed on your System and that you have an Internet connection to a news (NNTP) server.
If the above description is not clear, it is possible that you will not find an immediate use for NewsHopper. If you do want to read the news, it would probably be best that you first read through Adam C. Engst's "Internet Starter Kit For Macintosh" (Hayden Books), or another good book on how to connect a Macintosh to the Internet.
The most important thing to bear in mind when starting to use NewsHopper is that NewsHopper has specifically been designed for offline news reading. In other words, NewsHopper does not require the user to be permanently connected to the Internet and a news server in order to read and write articles. If you connect to the Internet using a modem, you will appreciate this feature.
NewsHopper will take the list of all the newsgroups you have subscribed to, connect to the news server, and automatically fetch (download) any new articles that appeared since the last time you connected. All the new articles will be added to a local ╥Newsfile╙ on your hard disk. Another important feature of NewsHopper is that you can configure a newsgroup so that only the subjects and author names will be fetched. Later, while offline, you will be able to specify (mark) which articles you actually want to read and NewsHopper will fetch them next time you connect to the news server. Of course, this is useful as it is much faster only to download the subjects than the entire text of all the articles.
When using NewsHopper, you will not be connected to the news server most of the time. Instead, you will be managing your local Newsfile (reading, writing, deleting or marking articles for download, etc...).

Ñ Limitations in this demo version
In this evaluation of NewsHopper, it is not possible to subscribe to more than 5 newsgroups, and the PowerPC native code is not included. The full version allows subscription to a maximum of 256 newsgroups, and runs in native mode on PowerMacs. A complete manual also comes with the full version.

Note that the screengrabs in the ╥Installing NewsHopper╙ chapter are slightly different, but all the files mentionned in this chapter are included in this package.
